SEP IR

Overview

One of the first part of professional aviation is Single Engine Instrument Rating training course. While you learn very well how to fly an aircraft according to visual flight rules during your PPL and hour building, Single Engine Instrument Rating is the basics of flying following instrument flight rules. It is the most important step in converting from recreational flying to all-weather operations down to IFR minima. Instrument Rating is an important milestone towards the professional pilot qualification and airline operation, but also a valuable development step for a recreational pilot, offering a higher level of safety, standardization and attitude.

As CAVOK Aviation Training is an airline-oriented pilot academy, it is very important that our trainees get the best IFR training they could have, since they will use this knowledge throughout their career. The aim of the training is to teach our candidates to plan and execute their flights and to communicate with the ATC units in English language in accordance with the Instrument Flight Rules and Instrument Flight Conditions.

Single Engine Instrument Rating authorizes its holder to operate a single engine and single pilot aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) with a CAT I. minimum with a decision height of 200 feet (60 m).

Course description

The course comprises two parts, theoretical part and practical part. In CAVOK flight school the Airline Transport Pilot Theoretical course is used for the SE IR course – which covers the full learning objectives of the instrument rating. For the practical part, there are more options. According to the standard version, the practical part consists instrument flight instruction of 50 hours on one CAVOK aircraft. Second alternative option is to complete one part (20 hours) on a flight simulator training device out of the 50 hours total duration. It takes around 60 days to complete the practical part of the Single Engine Instrument Rating – in optimum weather conditions.

In CAVOK all training flights originate from our base airport and we use various IFR certified airports in the region like military and civilian airports suitable for both precision and non-precision approaches. All our IR aircraft are equipped with Garmin G430, and dual CDI instruments for easy transfer from one aircraft to the other.

There is a check flight at the end of the practical training which will determine if the student is ready for the authority practical exam – which will cover the training objective in a 2 hours exam flight: departure, en-route and approach IFR navigation, holding patterns, precision and non-precision approaches and go-arounds.
