ATPL theory

Overview

The ATPL Theoretical Course is the gateway to your professional pilot career. It can be started right after your PPL and it is a must have if you are pursuing airline pilot dreams. Today, most of the airlines require the candidate to have the knowledge associated with this course, even if you will be operating as a first officer. Later, in your career you will be issued the Airline Transport Pilot’s License, and the ATPL Theoretical Certificate is a requirement. 

Course description

The ATPL Theoretical Course covers a total of 13 subjects, knowledge of which is mandatory for a future airline pilot, these are: Air Law, Airframes and Systems / Electrics / Power Plant, Instrumentation, Mass and Balance, Performance, Flight Planning and Monitoring, Human Performance and Limitations, Meteorology, General Navigation, Radio Navigation, Operational Procedures, Principles of Flight, Communications.

ATPL theoretical course consists of 650 hours of home study and approximately 100 hours of classroom briefings which are completed in block training sessions – 4 times in each one year period to optimize your stay in Hungary. It is important to pass the home exams as well before going to the authority theoretical examination – which needs to be completed within 18 months starting from the date of the first authority examination. And you have 6 attempts to attend the authority examination site to complete all 13 subjects.

The course includes the mandatory KSA-100 assessments which are required for the course completion since 2022.

After completing the ATPL Theoretical Course, you will be awarded with the Course Completion Exam Certificate from the Authority. You may use this certificate to cover the theoretical parts of your SEP IR or CPL training. Most of the airlines also require you to have this certificate in order to hire you.

Prerequisites

  • Age more than 17

  • ICAO Aviation English level 4 or higher or English Proficiency endorsement in the license

  • Valid EASA medical class 1

  • Valid PPL license or higher
